July 25, 2011 (Reuters) - Israeli security forces on Monday stopped a small motor boat in the Dead Sea carrying assault rifles and ammunition from Jordan and arrested two Palestinians suspected of smuggling, police said.

The salty desert lake also abuts the occupied West Bank but is generally quiet due to long-standing Israeli-Jordan security cooperation.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel accused Syria Monday of orchestrating lethal confrontations on the once-quiet cease-fire line between the two countries as a distraction from Damascus's bloody crackdown on an 11-week-old revolt.

Syria said 23 people, including a woman and a child, were killed and 350 wounded Sunday when Israeli troops fired on pro-Palestinian protestors who surged against the fortified boundary fence on Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights, June 5 (Reuters) - Israeli troops opened fire on Sunday at Palestinian protesters in Syria who rushed towards a border fence and Syrian state television said six demonstrators were killed.

"Anyone who tries to cross the border will be killed," Israeli soldiers shouted at the crowd of several hundred through loudspeakers on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

WASHINGTON, May 19 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will lay out a new U.S. strategy toward a skeptical Arab world on Thursday, offering fresh aid to promote democratic change as he seeks to shape the outcome of popular uprisings threatening both friends and foes.

In his much-anticipated "Arab spring" speech, Obama will try to reset relations with the Middle East, but his outreach could falter amid Arab frustration over an uneven U.S. response to the region's revolts and his failure to advance Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.
